TextOre license puts ORNL's Piranha in its tank.

TextOre's licensing of Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Piranha is enabling the Virginia-based company to introduce a powerful search and mining tool capable of processing large amounts of text data from the Internet.

Piranha, an award-winning knowledge discovery engine that won an R&D 100 Award in 2007, is an intelligent agent-based technology that will allow TextOre to analyze text data with unprecedented speed and accuracy. The software sorts huge numbers of text documents into groups that are easily processed.

CEO Robert Stewart envisions the acquisition of Piranha helping TextOre to add jobs in software development, sales and marketing for the new suite of products to be developed. With these new products, the company expects to compete on a global scale.

"All of the tools being developed between TextOre and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are multilingual and capable of searching, clustering and mining data in any language from large repositories of data around the world," Stewart said.

The technology, developed by a team led by Tom Potok of ORNL's Computational Sciences & Engineering Division, has already been vetted in the scientific community and been used in real-world applications by governmental agencies.

"The system can find similar documents to a document of interest, remove duplicated documents such as identical news stories from different sources, and automatically classify documents by topic," Potok said.

Because of the scalability of the agent architecture and better algorithms, Piranha runs 100 times faster than other search engines and can work with continuously changing data sets. Piranha has been used by the U.S. military and Department of Homeland Security to analyze large sets of streaming data.

TextOre and ORNL are also working to commercialize key ORNL technologies in the forensic computing areas, according to Stewart.

"The relationship with Oak Ridge National Laboratory will allow TextOre to rapidly accelerate our product development and bring these highly advanced technologies to the global market faster," Stewart said.

TextOre plans to expand its offices in Fairfax, Va., to support the anticipated growth from the licensing of Piranha.

Piranha also received an award from the Southeast Federal Laboratory Consortium. The R&D 100 Awards are presented annually by R&D Magazine in recognition of the year's top 100 technological innovations. Piranha was developed by Potok, Jim Treadwell, Mark Elmore, Brian Klump, Robert Patton and Joel Reed.

EmployeeScreenIQ Partners with BankersOnline.com to Introduce Banker Background Check.

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) April 12, 2011

Global employment screening provider EmployeeScreenIQ has entered a partnership with BankersOnline.com to provide customized background check services to North America financial institutions.

Jointly developed by the two companies, "Banker Background Check" draws upon EmployeeScreenIQ's in-depth industry experience. Three levels of screening ensure that an institution fully complies with Federal banking hiring regulations: the robust screening process includes social security number traces, countrywide criminal searches, Federal District criminal record searches, Homeland Security checks, and financial sanctions checks. Higher levels of screening also include pre-employment credit reports, Federal bankruptcy searches and education and employment verifications.

"Our partnership with BankersOnline.com is designed to help financial firms deter theft and embezzlement, as well as help prevent litigation over hiring practices," said Nick Fishman, chief marketing officer for EmployeeScreenIQ. "An effective background screening process can reduce turnover by verifying an individual's skills, certification and education prior to a hiring decision. We're proud to offer our services and expertise to BankersOnline.com and the financial space."

"When you consider the costs of retraining or replacing an unqualified employee, it's easy to see the critical need for background screening services," said Mary Beth Guard, executive editor of BankersOnline.com. "Additionally, Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act prohibits financial institutions from hiring an employee or consultant who has been convicted of a criminal offense involving dishonesty or money laundering without written FDIC consent. Steep financial penalties await those institutions who hire individuals in violationait's clear that employment screening is no longer a luxury, but a necessity in the banking industry."

Rights Issues Vex New-Era Talent Deals; Studios, Guilds Wrangle for Their Shares.(Special Report: iPod: TV's Odyssey)

Byline: James Hibberd

Any time a new market opens up, there's going to be conflict between the talent and the suits.

As soon as Internet and mobile television ventures began to look as if they might generate revenue, all sides scrambled to expand their share of the riches.

The wrangling over new-media contracts is intensifying, with agencies, studios, guilds and networks trying to secure their share and set precedents for future negotiations.

Even a simple talent deal for a television show has become complicated: Should an actor be required to perform in Web episodes?

If so, are those webisodes a separate program (and therefore paid) or are they merely promotional (and therefore covered as part of an existing contract)? And if a full-length episode is sold to iTunes, are such royalties paid on a home-video pay rate or a pay-per-view rate?

"Anytime something can be monetized, anybody who has any stake in it is going to want to have a say,'' said Bonnie Hammer, president of NBC Universal-owned USA and Sci Fi networks, which are currently facing a work stoppage among webisode showrunners on series such as "Battlestar Galactica'' who are seeking higher pay. "Rights issues and creative credit issues abound for everyone right now.''

Some of the drama has been fueled by agencies and guilds still smarting over a home video agreement that mandates 80 percent of all home video revenue goes to studios and 20 percent to talent royalties.

That figure was originally calculated in the early 1980s, when the home video market was smaller and costs of production higher. In the new, digital world of television, conditions have changed: There's no manufacturing cost to stream a show on the Web. There's no packaging, no warehouses, no transportation costs and-potentially-no middlemen.

With new markets opening up, agents and guilds want to ensure they don't get stuck with the short end of the deal this time.

Amid all the posturing, there's very little income currently being generated in new media television, and widely conflicting opinions exist as to which new revenue model is going to succeed.

"Agents want to be very careful they don't give away the store,'' said Karen Stuart, executive director of the Association of Talent Agents, in a June TelevisionWeek story.

"You have all these major players cutting deals, yet we don't know what these [business] models look like yet.''
